Orthopaedic Translational Engineering Laboratory

The Orthopaedic Translational Engineering Laboratory (OTEL) is a translational research laboratory in the Department of Orthopaedics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock focused on revolutionizing surgical guidance, orthopaedic surgery and disease management through surgical-guidance, advanced imaging, and photodynamic therapy.

DYNAMIC fluorescence may help Orthopaedic Surgeons make more informed decisions:
ICG fluorescence images showing (A) normal tibia, (B) tibia after dual transverse osteotomy [dashed lines], and (C) proximal endosteal stripping and intramedulary nail placement [dotted rectangle] in porcine model of orthopaedic trauma.

Our Mission

Led by Prof. Jonathan T. Elliott, and in close collaboration with physician-colleagues, OTEL engages in research federally funded by the NIBIB, NCI, and DOD, and operates at the intersection of surgery, biomedical engineering and imaging research. The mission of OTEL is to translate dynamic optical imaging techniques into the operating room, where they can impact real-time clinical decision-making. OTEL is supported by the Department of Orthopaedics, the Norris Cancer Cotton Center's Translational Engineering in Cancer (TEC) program, as well as numerous government grants from the NIH and DOD, and industry collaborative agreements.

The Dynamic Surgical Guidance Laboratory at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire is seeking innovative and highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to contribute to preclinical and translational research in image-guided surgery. The major goal of the lab is to use biomedical optics modalities (fluorescence and reflectance imaging, including dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) methods) to improve orthopaedic surgery procedures like debridement of infection and devitalized tissue and installation of hardware. Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Dartmouth College are located in Western New Hampshire, in the heart of beautiful Northern New England.
